I feel my emotions grow weak as I get older because I repeat my routine everyday. That makes me feel like the flow of time is getting quicker while my hearts become rough and hard. I’ve noticed I’m able to live in the moment with an open and clear mind when I spend my time in unknown places, unfamiliar people and the sea. That’s why I keep doing these trips with my fishing rod.

During the rainy season in Tokara, a huge school of flying fish gathers to spawn every year. When the sky gets dark they come into the ports of the islands and predators like Giant trevally, Dogtooth tuna and sharks follow them for easy meal.
You will know when the party begins when you start hearing explosive splashes feeding on the flying fish.
These predatory fish are big. They can easily be around 50kg, 60kg or even over 100kg. It might sounds like a fisherman’s paradise but when I saw this the first time, I got dizzy from the adrenaline rush. I was even scared to start fishing. I’ve been here for a few times but I still have to take some time to prepare for the fight.

I started fishing with a sinking minnow but I snagged my last lure pretty quick
,so I asked for a dead flying fish and rigged it up with a small sinker and a single hook.
I tightened up the drag to 15kg from 12kg and waited for a chance. I heard something smashing the flying fish so I casted out the bait and slowly start retrieving it. Suddenly, the surface exploded but I didn’t feel anything in my hands because the fish was swimming towards me. Even though I didn’t feel anything I knew it was a bite so I quickly reeled in the slack line and gave her a solid strike.

I felt the weight of the fish and the hook penetrate the mouth. I was ready for the violent run but she was shaking its head instead. I knew they are unstoppable when they pickup the speed so cranked up the drag while she was shaking her head. The fish started going crazy just after I tightened up the drag but she couldn’t peel off the line like a rocket because of the heavy pressure but still she was very strong.

I instantly thought it’s a big Dogtooth from her sharp and heavy head shakes but at this point I estimated she was around 50kg up to 60kg, so I decided to power fish her to get her in as quick as possible because I might still have a chance to release her.

It took me 2 minutes to get her under my feet but she was still deep down and denying to come up to the surface. I also felt like she is still saving power and I was about to get in trouble because my gas will runout in 3 more minutes.
I was right and she started torturing me pretty bad. She tried to bust me off twice but I was hanging on tight and survived her turn. My lower back was burning from the lactic acid but I’m sure the doggy was suffering a lot as well. It took more than 10 minutes to end the fight but she didn’t give up till the very end and she was barley alive when she came up to the surface. No wonder why it’s hard to release a doggy because they tend to fight to the death. We couldn’t weigh her because the commercial grade digital scale was missing that night but it was a big fat fish and I think it’s safe to say she was in the best condition.

One of my goals of this trip was to release a Dogtooth but in the end, we had to keep them all. Failing to release a smaller doggy made me think that it’s extremely difficult or even impossible to catch and release them. Even after a short fight and keeping the fish underwater, the fish sank to the bottom of the port when I attempt to release her and I had to dive in to pick her up. All of the doggies we caught were enough to feed our long trip and also shared to the villager. At least nothing was wasted.

Night fishing at the port was just a side hustle for us and we were trying to go to the best looking ledge on the island during the daytime. This was quite a mission because these islands are mostly covered by a very dense bamboo forest (dense like a lawn! Not even kidding). We spent 2-3 hours everyday cutting down the bamboos to get to the ledge but ended up being at a vertical cliff. I don’t know how long it’s going to take to get down to the magical ledge but we aren’t going to give up for sure. Can’t wait to catch a monster fish off the stones in Tokara
